Buzzing to Bedtime – Benny the Bee’s® Guide to being rested

Hello, wonderful friends and families. I’m Benny The Bee® and I’m here to share friendly guidance to all things sleep-related.  It’s back to school time for the kiddos. That means it’s also time to think about the importance of a good night’s sleep and the impact it has on us as we wake up and take on the day. Did you know that bees are superstar sleepers! It’s true! We bees know the importance of a good night’s sleep. Here are my tips that will help your kiddos be superstar sleepers too!

Tip #1 – Develop a Consistent Bedtime Routine-  Slow the buzz and start winding down about an hour before bedtime with calming activities. A consistent routine will help your little ones develop a sense of agency as their bodies and minds like to know what to expect. Include bath time, brushing teeth and then a favorite story or tune. Follow the same sequence each night. The consistency will signal your child’s body and mind that it’s time to sleep.

Tip #2 – Create a Cozy Hive – Your child’s bedroom or sleeping space should be as comforting as a bee’s hive. A cozy space will help your kiddo fall asleep faster. Calming colors, blackout curtains and clean sheets or blankets will help your child feel cozy and secure. Consider a noise machine for soothing sounds. A favorite bedtime buddy like a cuddly toy or stuffed animal will give your child that extra sense of comfort and security.

Tip #3 Proper Nutrition and Exercise – Nutrition and exercise impact our sleep. Daily exercise or activities and healthy eating habits are the pollen and nectar that fuel good sleep. Ensure your kiddos get some sort of regular physical activity each day. Help them make healthy food choices. Remember foods that are high in sugar and caffeine interfere with sleep, especially when consumed close to bedtime!

Tip #4 Master the Art of Relaxation – Just as bees take time to relax, your kiddos can learn this too! Practice simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing or guided sleep meditations. Relaxation will help your child unwind, slow down their senses and relieve stress. Meditations are especially helpful when your child finds it hard to fall asleep.

Tip #5 – Be a Queen (or King) Bee Role Model – As Queen or King Bee of your hive, your children emulate you. If they see you following a healthy sleep routine, they’ll more likely do the same. Show your kiddos that sleep is important to you too!

Conclusion – So there you have it my Bee Moms, Dads, Friends and Families! Sleep is the time for your kiddos to restore and recharge their minds and bodies! Be patient and consistent and soon your little ones will buzz their way to better sleep!

Until our next buzz, I’m Benny The Bee®, signing off and wishing you and your kiddos a restful night’s sleep. Sleep well to be(e) well.
